Why an official statement matters
A bank statement carries weight that a screenshot alone does not, because it comes directly from the bank rather than from an app you control. For a police report, a bank dispute, or a later claim, this difference often matters.
Request a statement covering the full period of the scam, not just the most recent transactions. If the scam unfolded over months, the earlier, smaller transfers are just as relevant as the final one.
Banks are used to this kind of request, so there is no need to feel awkward asking for a longer period or more detail than usual. Being specific about what you need often gets you a faster response.
What to specifically ask for
Ask your bank for a full transaction history, not a summary, so every transfer, fee, and reference number is included. If you paid through DuitNow, FPX, or a card, mention the specific method so the bank pulls the right records.
Request any transaction reference numbers or recall correspondence separately if you have already contacted the bank about the scam. These references are often needed again later for a police report or a formal complaint.
Getting records without losing time
Requesting statements does not need to wait until every other step is done. Start the request the same day you report the scam, since some banks take a few days to process it, and continue with your first actions in the meantime.
If you bank with more than one institution or the money passed through several accounts before you sent it, request records from each relevant account. A gap in the record can make the full picture harder to explain later.
Organising what you receive
Save statements as PDFs and keep them together with your other evidence, rather than leaving them in an email inbox you might not check again. Label each file clearly with the account name and the date range it covers.
Cross-check the statement against your own notes or transaction chronology to catch anything you may have missed. Small discrepancies are worth noting rather than ignoring.
What to do next
Once you have your statements, they become part of the file you bring to a police report or hand to a lawyer assessing your options. Keep requesting records even if recovery feels uncertain, since a complete file supports every route that follows.
A first assessment can also tell you what records matter most for your specific situation before you spend time gathering everything.

Common questions
Is a screenshot of my banking app enough, or do I need an official statement?
A screenshot is useful to have quickly, but an official statement carries more weight for a police report or a claim since it comes directly from the bank. Get both if you can, starting with the screenshot while you request the formal copy.
How far back can I request statements?
Most banks can provide statements going back several years, though older records may take longer to retrieve. Ask your bank directly for the specific period you need rather than assuming a limit.
Can I get details about the account that received my money?
Your own bank cannot usually share another customer's account details directly, but it can act on your behalf through a recall or dispute process. A police report or a lawyer acting for you may be able to request more through official channels.
