Legal aid is free or subsidised legal assistance provided to people who cannot afford a private lawyer. In Malaysia, it is available through government and non-government channels, including the Legal Aid Bureau and YBGK.
Eligibility is usually assessed based on a person’s income and the type of matter, since not every legal aid body covers every kind of case. Coverage and criteria can differ between bodies.
For scam victims, legal aid can be a starting point when the loss is significant but a private lawyer’s fees are out of reach, particularly for advice, some filings, or referral to the right process.

Checking legal aid eligibility early is worthwhile, since it can shape whether a victim pursues a claim on their own, with subsidised help, or privately.
