A cause of action is the set of facts and legal grounds that together give you the right to bring a claim against someone. For a scam, this is often the tort of deceit, where someone knowingly made a false statement that you relied on and lost money because of it.
When it matters
A lawyer identifying your cause of action early shapes the whole case, including which court to file in and what evidence matters most. It is also the starting point for working out when your limitation period began. Before filing a civil claim against a scammer, it helps to have this laid out clearly rather than assuming the facts speak for themselves.
